About the Author

Elias Lonnrot (1802–1884) was a Finnish philologist and collector of traditional Finnish oral poetry. He is best known for composing the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic compiled from national folklore. His true passion lay in his native Finnish language. He began writing about the early Finnish language in 1827 and began collecting folk tales from the rural people about that time. Lönnrot went on extended leaves of absence from his doctor's office; he toured the countryside of Finland, Sapmi (Lapland), and nearby portions of Russian Karelia to support his collecting efforts. This led to a series of books: Kantele, 1829–1831 (the kantele is a Finnish traditional instrument); Kalevala, 1835–1836 (possibly Land of Heroes; better known as the "old" Kalevala); Kanteletar, 1840 (possibly Kantele Daughter); Sananlaskuja, 1842 (Proverbs); an expanded second edition of Kalevala, 1849 (the "new" Kalevala); and Finsk-Svenskt lexikon, 1866–1880 (Finnish-Swedish Dictionary). Lönnrot was recognised for his part in preserving Finland's oral traditions by appointment to the Chair of Finnish Literature at the University of Helsinki. He died on 19 March 1884 in Sammatti, in the province of Uusimaa.

I'm not sure if this is the best translation out there, but I thought the introduction was informative, and I enjoy aspects of the translation. The Kalevala is a fascinating read. If you're interested in ancient cultures, literature, or mythologies, I highly recommend the Kalevala in any form (whether this particular rendition or another.) Especially if you have liked things like Virgil's Aeneid, Homer, or the Indian epic I am forgetting the name of.

If the stories of a people says much about those people, then the Finnish have long been lovers of nature, family, and deadpan humor. There were several touching moments, like when Ilmarinen, distraught over the murder of his wife, doggedly forges a new wife of gold and silver, but finds the metal wife provides but cold comfort. And there is loads of deadpan humor, like when wild Lemminkainen (after chopping off the host's head) discovers now might be a good time to leave the never-pleasant northlands, seeing as he wasn't invited to the wedding there anyway. This translation from John Martin Crawford is written in a mystical, almost hypnotic 8-syllable trochaic like the Finnish original, with the emphasis on the odd syllables, like so:The trochaic was most pleasing,Though a few times quite distracting."Dee da dee da" boomed the meter,Drowning then the lofty story.I like that all the magic in the Kalevala is born of song and ancient wisdom. And if you think about how these were ancient folk songs, there's a humorous meta-quality to it, like the singers of these folk-songs were slyly suggesting their own singing contained magical qualities and ancient wisdom. It's an interesting parallel to the Arabian Nights, where you have storytellers telling stories about great storytellers who get themselves out of trouble by telling stories. There were a few OCR issues with this Kindle version that threw me off until I caught on to what they were. I didn't mind though, because really, it's free.

Read it as background for teaching a class on "The Song of Hiawatha ".Henry Wadsworth Longfellow borrowed the style from the epic poem for"Hiawatha". Interesting reading on its own.

The translation is good, easy to read and reflects the elements of Finnish language. The only surprise - and hence the 4 stars - was that the text was scanned in imperfectly, and certain words are misspelled and reader has to guess what they are. But in other respects - it is great..

Very interesting piece of folklore and Finnish history which I read in preparation for a trip to Finland. I also read that it is what inspired Longfellow's poem of Hiawatha! As you read the Kalevala, you immediately notice that it has the same number of syllables per line and therefore the rythym of Hiawatha.I was later delighted to read that Longfellow has used the Kalevala as a model!

I'd been interested in the Kalevala for a while, having heard music based on it. It did not disappoint.

I'm not quite finished with this on my kindle but I have throughly enjoyed it so far. Years ago (in my " read everything related to Tolkien days") I read a well-worn translation of the Kalevala from my public library and enjoyed it very much. I don't believe this is the same translation but the cadence of epic poetry is still there making it lovely to read. The Runes are indicated but there are breaks missing between verses--it seems like they tried to put them in but had a formatting issue-perhaps?? The various "songs" are powerful and evocative. No lover of nature should miss this work; the imagery is beautiful and timeless. I heartily recommend this work and only slightly less this kindle version. I'd really like a version of the Kalevala with the usual breaks and a table of contents-- and a glossary would really help the uninitiated like me.

The poetry is amazing! I absolutely love it! This is easily the best book I've ever downloaded, I highly recommend it to anyone. And it's a free book anyway, so there's no reason not at least look at it.
