goes over every step. Has check lists for parts. Great for a 1st timer or someone like me who hasn't done an engine in decades. Just go page by page and you wont have to worry about forgetting anything. This book isn't for building race engines or modern hipo stuff. Its covers rebuilding a stock "gen 1" style SBC.
Was torn between 3 and 4 stars. I have used an earlier version of this book to rebuild a few small block chevy's - it's the ultimate rebuild book for the older motors. The problem is it hasn't been updated for the one-piece rear seal or roller cam & lifter installation. However, there isn't much available that is any better. So I settled on 4 stars.
Old, not fully up to date, but still a cornerstone of this activity. I learned TONS from this book. I am now well prepared to build up a 350 for my Jeep Wrangler. What the book did not cover can be found in supplemental materials. Highly recommended if you want to learn how to do this.
A slight update of the classic. Still a little dated, but a must buy. Nothing else like it for a Gen I small block Chevy. I actually have three copies. One original and two new, because I misplaced and urgently needed it for a rebuild.
I bought this as a reference. It came fast, in the mail, & the price was good!
I purchased this book prior to buying my SBC engine, eventually a V8 283. I flipped through it, pretty much clueless. Anyway, I picked up an engine; the guy I bought it from was kind enough to start building it for me. Guess what! He had this book, also. Once he pointed out what items I might need for a decent engine; this book started to make sense.This book, for me, is informational. It gives some detail(s) that is needed, although sometimes not enough. I have been able to gather the information I need to build a respectale 283 engine with some horsepower. Some areas of this book have been highlighted by me more than others but, again, I'm building a 283.I, also, found out that my Lead-worker at my job had picked up this book from the library, he thought it was helpful, also. He's building a V8 350. To supplement the info in this book, I also, purchased How to Rebuild the Small-Block Chevrolet: Step-by-Step Videobook (S-A Design Video Workbench), which is another good book in its own right to have laying around.

This a 1978 publication but it is an excellent reference book for small block chevy! I needed some info and a "refresher" course for the 327cu chevy.This book covers it.It is just what I needed and more! I like it!Mike
