I bought this book because I have recently started painting again and wanted some additional instruction. My first project out of this book was the Downy Woodpecker with the tulips. I followed the instructions and the photos in the book, I did not have all of the colors she used so had to improvise a bit but I think my painting came out pretty good. This helped me quite a bit. I did notice on the tulip instructions, that the instructions ended with the leaves and did not talk about painting the stems of the flowers, but it is not hard to do using the photo.
Another absolute winner from Sherry. The designs are gorgeous and the instructions are fantastic (as usual). From 4 different background preparations, to setting up your palette, to step by step painting instructions of the birds, leaves, flowers, and other included elements, Sherry pretty much holds your hand through each painting. The only thing that would be better is to have Sherry painting each design on DVD. This is another Sherry Nelson must have book.
I purchased this book and I have not been disappointed. Clear concise instuctions, list of supplies and also patterns to use for the beautiful birds and flowers. I am so glad I purchased this book. If you want to learn how to oil paint birds and make them look realistic with feathers and all---this is the book. I love to oil paint but I am bad at drawing. This book also includes patterns for each project. I am going to paint all of the projects in this book because they are all so stuning.
A great book that shows you exactly how to get the details of birds. Especially In feathering. My creations were always so flat, now with the techniques I am learning I am sure that my birds will have more live definition. Especially the eyes.
Content of this book is good, but since I purchased before a hard cover edition of the singing birds book, I found this other one with lower quality... images and text too small, can’t keep opened in one page you need to somehow 'break the back' to stay in one page...., again, comparing against the singing birds book ....
Sherry's book is incredible! Until I picked up this book I never really thought about painting birds although I love to birdwatch. Now I am hooked on drawing and painting birds. I love trying to recreate all the little details that make Sherry's paintings so awesome to look at. To me the book is worth 10 times what I paid for it. I originally found the book at our local library. When I purchased my Kindle HDX recently it was a no-brainer which book would be my first e-book purchase. I can now take this wonderful book wherever I travel and paint and or draw to my heart's content!
I just started out with painting, but I was hoping that I could trace some of them I like the fact that I can use my own carbon copy paper to uses as a guide to get in there and paint something!
