This book left me a little confused because of the author’s claim that all characters are fictitious. Joey Smallwood was a very real person who became premier of the province of Newfoundland/Labrador. If this Smallwood was a work of fiction, the life described runs a close parallel to the real Smallwood. When in Labrador working as a part-timer for CBC, my Canadian colleagues referred to Smallwood as just a pig farmer who was too liberal for a true Canadian’s tastes. This particular Smallwood was impoverished and not well educated, but he led a colorful but hard life, becoming a pig farmer and Premier as did the real Smallwood. There’s also a story of unrequited love, also fictional (?). The story bounces back and forth from the history of colonial and modern day Newfoundland and the unusual relationships among the characters. It works.
The history of New Foundland is told through personal accounts, newspaper columns, communication or lack of it between our two protagonists, Smallwood and Fielding.A personal story is woven through a novel of the history of New Foundland which you have to read the whole book to discover.I found myself angered by the all too human behavior of my protagonists and a real distate for the politics that override its' people's best interests. But in the end the reality of human emotions and their frailty seems to be what this is really about.Read this book. NewFoundland deserves to be acknowledged and for the reason that very good books do not have to be comfortable or predi table.
Ironically, this is a review long after both the book and audio tape (not CD or MP3) have been completed. The audio tape is a condensed version of the book--but it will not disappoint the listener. Missing, however, is much of the background and "texture" in Johnston's book, but one will still get the primary storyline.What especially added to the audio version's authenticity were the Newfoundland's accents, primarily "townie" ones at that, although one will hear some "bayman" accents depending on the character (for example, "fadder" for father).One caveat: Do not consider this the standard historical novel, where well-known historical events and figures are woven into the protagonist's life (in this case, Joey Smallwood). Sheilagh Fielding, the second-most prominent character in the novel, is purely the creation of Johnston's mind. But Johnston did weave much historical information in the novel, which will not disappoint.If someone still has the ability to listen to cassette tape, I highly recommend this audio book.
This is an unusual, historically based novel that attempts to tell the story of a rather odd little man who came from a dysfunctional family with little to nothing and ended up being perhaps the most manipulated public official in his home country. When I got to the end, I realized I had pretty much wasted my time. There were funny points along the way but this man was strange beyond belief as were almost all of the other characters. Perhaps this is a novel that can only be enjoyed by someone from Newfoundland.
This story of Joey Smallwood told by himself (his fictional self, that is) gives dimension to a historical figure who was much loved and much despised in his time. Johnston's ability to develop a self-aware narrator who explains without pretense his fears, his dreams and his shortcomings is a major achievement. Fielding, Smallwood's foil, is an extraordinary character who not only is compelling in her own right, but provides a perspective that enhances the reader's understanding of Smallwood from their meeting as teenagers throughout his life and career. The wit and wonderful verbal sparring between these two characters made it difficult to put the book down. I enjoyed every word.
Seldom have I read a book that was as funny, intelligent and informative as this one. It is a fictionalized story of the real Joe Smallwood who was premier of Newfoundland for many years after that country joined Canada. The most compelling character is the fictional Ms Fielding who has a lifelong and beguiling relationship with Smallwood. Her voice is the voice that makes this book compelling. Who knew that Newfoundland could be so interesting? I am researching a vacation there because of this book. Will be reading more of this authors work
I was intrigued by the history of Newfoundland about which I knew almost nothing. I learned a lot about it through the device of a pair of people who lived through the decision Newfoundland made regarding its identity at a crucial time in that history. The couple’s narrative was affecting, if somewhat diffuse and confusing at many points.
This book explained what it is/was like to be a newfoundlander a few years back. Isolated, stuck in it's ways. Very interesting characters who were flawed but lovable. The ending left me unfilled but I enjoyed the read.
