The premise of the story is great. I only gave the book three stars because there are some issues with it that bug me. The author goes through the story as if he expects the reader to automatically know the characters, things, and places without having any description to help out. It took me awhile to realize that some of the characters aren't even human. Some of the terminology used for items and other things were never described in a way that the reader could know what they are. I was left scratching my head forever trying to figure out what a mogrifer was, and a hax, and a balast, and a dozen or so other things. I still don't know exactly how a certain female character birthed "The Saint" near the end, just that she did, instead of the main character who actually WAS The Saint. I think. It was an ok story but I dont think I'm going to follow through with a second read, to clear up my confusion, like I originally planned.

I was about a third of the way through the book and for some reason I was having a hard time continuing. I really liked the characters so I stuck with it. The way it all comes together in the end completely blew me away. I was mad at myself for almost giving up.

Excellent book. I had no idea where it would lead - so refreshing! Definitely food for thought. I couldn't wait to get back to it during breaks and loved how it came together, building upon itself with real substance. Excellent characters.

OK. That's not true... probably. But the world he's invented here makes me wonder! The physics and biology of this fantasy are wonderfully impossible. But, he's crafted the parts with such internal consistency and breathed such humanity into the characters that they've come to life in my imagination. It's a motley collection of characters bound together by a prophecy written into the skin of a boy on the brink of becoming... someone... a Saint? Maybe. All in all, it's a new world that's well worth visiting! I enjoyed Zombies Ocean and am pleased that Grist has another crazy world to explore. I'm looking forward to the trip!

[Preface: I don't usually read fantasy/sci-fi] Book started out nice - I thought the other-worldly religion was a creative idea by the author. I really liked the different castes and how though they were so different there was unity forming between Sen and his newly found companions despite the adversity and the muck from people's respective pasts that bubbled to the surface. However, I started to increasingly see many parallels the story started to draw to Christian theology/faith. For anyone who grew up in or around the Christian church, the parallels drawn in this book become increasingly apparent. I'm all for freedom to believe whatever one believes in but this story seemed to have a specific agenda against Christian beliefs to a point where it seemed like it was trying too hard to make a point that ended up just taking away from what good of a novel it could have been. I found it distracting, unsavory, and wasteful. Again, depending on the amount of knowledge a given reader has on Christian theology, they may or may not have picked up on it at all. As for me... really disappointed because I liked a lot of things/characters in the book and where the book could have potentially gone. I'll be selling it.

I have no idea what type drug the author was on when he came up with this story, but it was definently a strong one. This was the absolute weirdest, most confusing, and random book I've ever read. After finishing this review, I hope to never think about this book again. I think I'm going to go reread the Kings Dark Tidings or Benjamin Ashwood series, anything to get this.. thing.. out of my head.

I can't say enough about Michael John Grist and his amazing ability to bring you into a story. To captivate you. You won't be able to put this book down .... as I have found in all his books. Be prepared for total immersion into .............Aradabar. An entire city devoted to learning (don't freak those who hate school and all manners of learning - it's NOT like that lol). A city so beautiful ..... its glass towers destroyed ..... the city buried ... and all those within ...... lost ..... in the lava that ravished the land.Never fear .... there's ALWAYS a hero/heroine when disaster strikes! A child survived. A child who's future was written all over his body. (Talk about tats!) that told of a prophecy that a hero would come and save the day. The child grew into a man ..... the man would grow into the prophesied hero who, along with his friends, would embark to find the fabled Saint Ignifer. No big deal right? Of course not! HAH! Saint Ignifer is dead. Not just dead dead ..... but dead for years .... hundreds of years. Now, THERE is a challenge I'm not sure I'd want to take on.In a land ruined by such devastation. Where slaves work, hard labor, devoid of happiness, of hope for a better future. This is where Mr. Grist's novel will take you. Get ready because you are in for a ride of a lifetime!Mr. Grist's talent to bring these characters to life is on par with no other author I've read. Each character is molded and shaped and brought to life in such a way that you almost believe they are truly alive.I have to admit I'm not much of a 'fantasy' reader but this is the beginning of a another of his series' that will keep me on the edge of my seat until the very ..... last ..... word.
