This latest installment makes this one of the most consistently well-written, genuinely interesting and fun series in the litrpg genre. I hear some complaints the title is misleading or that it ends too soon or that it's too much of this or that, but in reality it's all of the things we've been asking for... and if it leaves us wanting more, the same was true of books 1, 2, and 3 and all signs point to it continuing to be true for books 5, and on. There are some great hunts, quests and battle scenes in this book. There are some truly disturbing references to the Dark Arts. There is village-building. There is great character development (Krom, Beyan, Hafiz's sons, ...). There's introduction of great back-story (the Dark Khans). There's Richter doing what's necessary, growing as a leader, taking on more responsibility. There's fasinating magic (Blood Magic, esp.). There's humor (the Hood). There's Richter struggling to prepare for what's coming, good and bad things from all directions. Aleron Kong has done a great job with this series so far, balancing growth and maintaining dramatic tension. He's made the readers care about the characters, the village, the nemeses. It's a great setting with a lot of potential and I'm really looking forward to whole books on just little corners of it (The Catacombs, the Serrated Mountains, the Plains of Gold Plains, some of the ancient and timeworn dungeons on Richter's Map, the big stuff and small stuff that we're leading up to), as well as seeing the main characters grow and develop (Alma, Krom, ...). This is a great series, with a great author and an amazing fan base. Highly recommended.
A disappointing but not altogether surprising drop in quality in this book. I would almost suspect an entirely different author if glimpses of this style of writing weren't sprinkled throughout the previous three books, and it is just as ugly in the light as it was half-concealed in the shadows. I got up through the scene with Nexus and realized I was reading purely out of obligation and my enjoyment and sense of wonder had waned dramatically since the first book. My sense of obligation was obliterated by the the beginning of said scene. Everything but Nexus's motivation, which in itself was weakly given purpose, could be removed and the plot wouldn't be affected a bit.Richter is about as deep as a shower floor. He is exceedingly superficial and the most exciting bit of growth he has displayed was the realization that he is not in a game. Past that, any "weakness" is equally as superficial as his is, leaving no room for growth to even happen. Perhaps that is his one real fault, but it's not like the author does anything with it. It's treated as an adorable quirk of Richter's. I could forgive a weak protagonist if the side characters were interesting or showed some realistic growth, but only Sion ever had a single moment of true development and interesting backstory. One moment in four books of decent storytelling. The abundance of unnecessary references that shatter immersion and suspension of disbelief every few pages and absurdly crude comparisons and jokes are cringe-worthy at best and extremely off-putting. The entire series (at least to this point) reads like some poorly socialized neckbeard power fantasy devoid of any room for meaningful or thought provoking writing, not to mention that each successive book displays a degrading maturation of writing. The books are clearly written for a young male audience and by this point do their level best to ensure women feel completely disrespected and unwelcome at the table. I won't be finishing this series, which is disappointing as the premise so captured my imagination that I felt genuinely excited for a series rather than mildly curious.
First this an awesome series so far. I'm currently 30% through this book and came across a discrepancy between this book and book 2. Locations 4604 in book 2 and 2298 in Catacombs. It has to do with Sion's affinities, while talking with Richter he says and shows that they were all increased due to the Quickening. Then in the new crystal garden, Tirrod says and shows the same thing, his affinities increased. But Sion says and shows that his were not affected. I don't know that it really matters either way, other than in my mind. Lol but I thought I would point it out at least for the author. I am going to triple check to make sure that I am not misreading something, but the crazy in me couldn't let it go without mentioning it. Still love the books though!
Not a lot really happened in this book. Mostly a lot of managing the town and hunting.I don't understand why this was called catacombs. He didn't even go down there this book.
So AWESOME! This series just keeps getting better and better. And did I say BETTER? Outstanding world building, realistic, funny main character, the magic, how the book is organized - all love, Love, LOVE! Seriously, this guy can write. I am so sucked into his books Every.Single.Time! I am not a gamer, I'm just someone who's thrilled to find a new fantasy sub genre. Reading fantasy for forty-five years has been one of the great joys of my life, but it's so damn cool to find a whole new way of looking at it and writing it. This guy really knows his stuff and has such an amazing imagination, and each book leaves you drooling for the next one. Start at the beginning with book 1, because otherwise you'll be lost, but READ THIS SERIES!
I stumbled across this series with the first book being a freebie and I have been hooked ever since. I'm about halfway through Swarm and I'm at the point where I want to tell everyone I know about it. I find myself laughing out loud when Richter uses phrases no one gets and the reactions and conversations that come from it. I find myself crying at the moments where the bonds of true friendship are being made. The characters are so well developed and I care so much about them now. If anything ever happens to Alma I'm going to be pissed! Love love love this series and can't wait to read what's next!!
