I snuggled in bed one evening a month or so ago to read this book and was absolutely shaken to the core that I had not had this book for the past two decades to give to all of the families I have worked with for years as a means of protection for their relationship, as well as their family. This books really helps those embarking on the journey towards family to understand the cracks, crevices and quicksand that can mire individuals down so that they can't embrace, let alone, enjoy, the wonder of having a child. So many familes find that having a child does not strengthen their relationship but instead begins to unravel the ties that bound them to their beloved in the beginning, and they are left bereft and unsupported just when they most need support, love and intimacy. So often in life opportunity arises when we least expect it. I had asked my daughter to review Elly Taylor's book Becoming Us for the December issue of Interaction. While visiting my mother recently she expressed interest in reading and reviewing the book. This has given a wonderful generational perspective on the topic of transition to parenting.Mum asked me to review this book and I must admit I found it a little hard going at first as I was closed minded and apprehensive about reading yet another baby book. As I got further along it became easier to read and I became aware that many of the feelings I had experienced since Bella's birth were a common and normal part of becoming a parent. Through the book I came to realise that family dynamics change as we move from `me' to `me plus 1(we)'to `me plus 1 and a baby (three)'. This book fills the gap left by most other books about parenting. Elly gives the reader knowledge and practical skills to overcome and deal with the changes experienced while transitioning to parenting. Becoming Us is a great tool for all families as they become parents. It was a pleasure to read.Wendy Brickwood, mother of Bella aged three years.I love this book for the way it breaks through the veil of secrecy that so often surrounds transition to parenting. I love the honesty in the prologue where Elly shares her `Ah ha' moments of realisation that accompany the dawning knowledge that as a mother you are now and forever responsible for a new little person; and the effect of this on the couple relationship. This honesty sets the tone of the book as Elly defines love, describes the stages of love and learning and examines stress in relation to the journey of parenthood. This author is explaining what every family goes through. The “secret†is out. Having a baby changes your life & affects you’re relationships! Great book. A little choppy to read, but the message is good. I plan to recommend it to my clients (doula).
It is as if the author was in the house with us. This book has been a road map to getting back on track after baby. I would highly recommend before or after baby, or anytime you feel that as a couple, you are drifting apart too much.
This book should be read by anyone planning a family. The reality is important to understand.

Meeting Elly Taylor was not a coincidence, rather a significant part of my journey as a mother, parent educator and founder of Parent From The Heart. After reading her extraordinary book, Becoming Us, I was reassured of so many thoughts, beliefs and feelings pertaining to the complexities of parenthood. As a classroom teacher, I witnessed and handled hundreds of children over the years, who displayed a wide variety of dysfunctional behavior, lacked social-emotional intelligence, communication and conflict resolution skills. It became apparent early on in my career that despite their best efforts and intentions, most parents were simply unequipped and unprepared to teach their children the life skills they themselves were never taught. Their was typically a direct correlation between wellness and functionality in family relationships and the success of all other relationships, with peers and authority figures. I'm grateful to have a book like Becoming Us today, as it will further assist me in my present career supporting expecting and new parents, but also the more seasoned moms and dads raising adolescents or teens, who continue to struggle daily to sustain a healthy balance between parenting, family life and their marriage. I have heard first-hand, from kids of all ages, how sad, frustrated and disconnected they feel when their parents neglect to display genuine love, respect and affection for each other. This model needs to change and improve in order to preserve the mental health and well-being of all children and families right from the beginning. Thank you Elly, for this invaluable gift and dose of reality as it will significantly and positively impact generations to come!
