I wish I would have read this wonderful book before I volunteered at Best Friends Animal Societies sanctuary in southern Utah. This book truly relates to the reader the miracles that created this most beloved sanctuary and the trials, tribulations and sadness that the sainted founders endured while they steadfastly followed the dream of "No more homeless pets!" Love, compassion and gentleness permeates Angel Canyon and the entire sanctuary to the point it is virtually overwhelming! This book by Samantha Glen tells it all! My advice, buy the book, read it and then volunteer at Best Friends.....you will not be disappointed!
I am an animal lover. This book about the humble beginnings of what is now one of the largest and most beloved sanctuaries for animals in the U.S. is riveting from beginning to end. Brilliantly, humorously, poignantly written, this author allows us to know the wonderful men and women who had a dream and sacrificed to bring it to fruition. Each remarkable person is etched in my memory, and each dog, cat, rabbit, written about will have a place in my heart forever. I am thrilled to know that Best Friends is thriving and continues its mission to provide a safe haven for each pet brought to them, and to raise the awareness that every life is valuable, worthy of love and safety and life. I highly recommend this wonderful book.
This was an excellent book to read. I have always been a dog lover having as many as five at a time(all rescues of course) This tells the story about Best Friends from its inception to the success it has become today through all of their hard work and trials. The bottom line is that it was always about the animals. Thank you for this inspiring look at many years of hard work by some amazing people.
Loved this book. It shows how we can make a difference in the life of the animals we all love. The best thing about this book is that it transmit joy and hope. So many books on animals delight in showing the terribly cruel ways humans can treat pets. It's disheartening. This book instead delights in showing how love and kindness CAN make a difference. Read this and you'll feel the peace and joy of Best Friends.
Just a delight for anyone who loves animals and supports the work of Best Friends. Rated down from 5 to 4 stars only because I'd have liked to learn a little more about how these people came to know each other. I understand that it would have distracted from the main plot, but it would have been worth it, I think. It's nice to read this narrative, which ends in 2000, knowing how the Sanctuary has flourished over the intervening years.
If you are acquainted with Best Friends you will enjoy the background this book provides as to how they started. I have followed this rescue group for many years and the information of the very beginnings was extremely interesting. The stories and personalities of the various animals added so much also. Its a wonderful and unique organization and enjoyed the book finding it hard to put down.
Samantha Glen's book is creative, loving and heart warming. She reminds us of the extremely important issue of earth's precious needy creatures. I enjoyed this book from the first page on. I had heard about the sanctuary, being an animal lover, but I never really knew all they did. The work and sacrifice of the people who started this sanctuary is amazing. I now know what is happening to assist all the animals they rescue. I hope to visit the sanctuary next summer when I am in Colorado. It will be a several days trip, but one I am looking forward to.
