As a caregiver, I was a little like Goldilocks when it came to reading books about caregiving, grief, and ALS—some were too clinical, some were too spiritual or faith-based, some were too heavy-handed, with so much detail that I ended up feeling confused or defeated. I wanted a concise and accessible how-to resource. I found it in "Home Hospice Navigation: The Caregiver’s Guide" by Judith Sands, RN, MSL, BSN, CPHRM, CPHQ, CCM, LHRM, ARM.If the notion of home hospice has crossed your mind or has been offered to you or your loved one as an option, I strongly recommend that you take a look at this informative read and wonderful resource that does, indeed, help you to comfortably approach the navigation of home hospice options. Home Hospice Navigation is written for the caregiver in easy to read, well organized sections, with good advice that is offered as if Ms. Sands is standing next to you anticipating your questions. First and foremost, it clears up the glaring misperception that home hospice is the equivalent of euthanasia and that someone needs to be close to death to receive home hospice services. Instead, Ms. Sands points out that “hospice should be thought of as living fully as long as possible and helping your loved one to die a peaceful and comfortable death.†I have to admit, I found it confusing when my husband was put on home hospice. It was a physical therapist from our visiting nurse program who suggested it when he needed more help and was nervous about being alone but reluctant to accept that he needed to hire an aide. This woman set in motion a process that allowed Ben to receive helpful care, support and medical supplies. As caregivers, we often neglect our own physical and emotional needs and hospice care services also provided a lot of emotional support to me. Yes, there is a trade-off at times with what is covered by insurance, but home hospice is definitely an option worth exploring. This benefit is covered through Medicare, Medicaid and most commercial insurance policies.Ms. Sands lets you know what information is applicable across the board and what may be specific to your state or insurance. Throughout the book you will find anecdotes about Ms. Sands’ experience with home hospice with her mom. These stories show the very personal inspiration for this book and make it very relatable for many caregivers. There are references to the important documents that everyone should complete, which are conveniently organized and available through her web site. Also, you will find suggestions of considerations, conversations that should take place, and a step-by-step, very accessible process for how to begin to engage hospice services and work with medical and related staff.I wish I had this book when my husband and I were making decisions about his health care as his ALS progressed. I highly recommend "Home Hospice Navigation: The Caregiver’s Guide" to those of you who are daunted by home hospice and do not know where, how or whether to consider it as an option.
I am a big fan of hospice care for dying individuals. Over my decade as a patient advocate, I have seen the way good hospice care brings physical, mental and spiritual comfort at the end of life. But the idea of hospice can be frightening to people. This fear mostly stems from not knowing or understanding what happens once hospice gets involved.Luckily, Judith R. Sands, RN, MSL, CCM, CPHRM, CPHQ, LHRM, ARM has written Home Hospice Navigation: The Caregiver's Guide to help guide people through the process. In addition to her lengthy list of credentials, Judith was the caregiver for her mother and experienced the ups and downs of home hospice. She has taken her experience and distilled it into chapters covering the entire hospice experience, from knowing when it might be time to call them in to choosing which hospice to call to words of comfort at the very end of life. The book itself is short, with lots of brief chapters covering crucial aspects of managing hospice care out of the home. Its tone is both experienced and compassionate.Home Hospice Navigation: The Caregiver's Guide will help anyone dealing with end of life issues with a loved one.
I am an RN with a hospice background and I was with my father in his dying process. Judith's book touched on everything that hospice providers know and what family care givers should understand and consider. It is superbly arranged with logical categories and she uses helpful informational icons which include resource links.Judith has a talent for dissecting the complex and making it understandable. Judith combines personal information with a medical understanding of the dying process and then seamlessly presents the practical navigation of the process. Her book is a valuable, insightful and easy read that will help many.I hope Judith writes another navigation guide for other crucial, complex and difficult life issues.
This is a great book! Nothing prepared me for the endless problems of dealing with my elderly parent. I simply had no idea where to start, what to ask or even how the caring for elderly people works. This book is pragmatic and takes you by the hand explaining the how, who and when of home/hospice care. I highly recommend it for anyone who has an elderly parent.
This book was written as a practical useful guide. It should be read by all of us with aging loved ones. It gives clear advice on steps to take, questions to ask, and provides helpful checklists in the appendix. Having gone through this process with a loved on in 2015, I wish we had had this insight and guidance. This should be read by not only the caregiver but also the aging love ones, it will make having the conversations easier and set expectations as we all enter this stage of our lives.
I just finished Home Hospice Navigation by Judith Sands and highly recommend. The book is filled with great resources and direction for all! We will all face the end of life and Hospice is a support many do not utilize based on preconceived beliefs what hospice does. Judith Sands provides answers and clarity through her own life experiences and vast professional work and knowledge. As a Certified Private Care Manager, Judith's book is now a valuable part of my services and 'tool-box'. Carla Payne, Owner Aging Care Matters, llc
This book provided a lot of information and was extremely helpful. I recommend this book to anyone who has elderly parents so they know what to expect and what to prepare for. The author has a graceful way of explaining and simplifying the hard to discuss topics. It is not just for those going through hospice care, any caregiver would find helpful information in the pages.
